New rules regarding septic tanks prohibit the discharge of waste into watercourses, in order to prevent the possibility of pollution. By now you should have either replaced or upgraded your system to meet the new requirements. These new rules were originally introduced in January 2015 and applied only to new septic tank systems but since January 2020 they include all systems – old and new. The current standards for new systems are:
- BS EN 12566 for small sewage treatment plants
- BS 6297:2007 for drainage fields.
